Tiruvannamalai District Administration, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, organised a massive anti-plastic awareness campaign at the Thandarampattu Government Boys' Higher Secondary School on January 25. District Chief Educational Officer Swami Muthalagan inaugurated the event, which included a rally and plastic collection activities involving school students, volunteers, and departmental officials.
The initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu government's Re-Manjapai campaign, which promotes eco-friendly practices, such as the use of cloth bags, to combat plastic pollution. The campaign encourages sustainable waste management and includes monthly plastic cleanup drives. At the Thandarampattu event, approximately two tons of plastic waste collected throughout the week were prepared for use as fuel in cement factories. A rally was held in the Thandarampattu area to distribute awareness pamphlets and featured artistic performances by folk artists highlighting the importance of reducing plastic use.
In addition, a cleanup drive was conducted at Sathanur Dam, a popular tourist site, where volunteers collected around 200 kg of plastic waste. The collected waste was segregated and handed over to local bodies for proper disposal. District Environmental Engineer Kalaichelvi, National Green Force Coordinators, and local officials played a vital role in mobilising participants and ensuring the program’s success.
