Food Safety and Drug Administration department arranged an awareness meeting on Mayonnaise for restaurant owners in collaboration with the Erode District Hotels Association.
Speaking at the event, FSSAI District Designated Officer Dr. Thanga Vignesh said Mayonnaise made from unsterilized raw eggs, which has been banned, should be avoided by consumers and traders.
When mayonnaise is made from unsterilized raw eggs, the  Bacterial germs like Salmonella and Listeria can also be found in mayonnaise, which can cause diarrohea and typhoid fever among those who eat it. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government has banned the production, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of mayonnaise from unpasteurized raw eggs for one year from April 8th. . If any business activities, including production and sale in violation of the government order, are found, they will be confiscated, food samples will be taken, analyzed and further legal action will be taken based on the analysis report.
Further, if this is found during the field inspection by the Food Safety Department, legal action including suspension of the food safety license will be taken after due investigation. In order to maintain health, consumers should also avoid this.
However, as an alternative for mayonnaise lovers, mayonnaise made from sterilized and processed eggs or vegetarian mayonnaise without eggs will continue to be available in the market. There is no restriction on traders from manufacturing or selling them. They can be consumed within the limits of a balanced diet according to the health condition of the consumers.
