Maniyan Medical Centre, Erode, in association with Erode district cycling association and University of Reading arranged a cycle rally from its hospital to the district forest office on Sunday to create awareness among public on snakes.
It was flagged off by Erode forest ranger Surya. The hospital head Dr S Senthilkumaran said that the hospital saved over 1100 persons who suffered with snake bites during the past 5 years.
There are 240 snakes in the world and of which 52 are poisonous and among them Cobra, Krait, Russells Viper, Saw scaled viper are more poisonous. So, there is no need to kill snakes. They would bite only if we disturb them and enter their living places. If people who suffered with snake bite are brought to nearby hospital within an hour, their life could be saved. Now, government hospitals also have good medicines for snake bites. We distributed 13 lakh pamphlets in Erode, Karur, Tirupur, Namakkal and Salem districts to create awareness among public on snakes, he added.
