During the Vajpayee era in 1988, the BJP formed an alliance with the AIADMK. After that, former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had said that there would be no alliance with the BJP at any time. Even in 2014, she started her campaign with the slogan ``Lady or Modi.'' In that election, the AIADMK alliance won all 39 seats.
After her death, in 2019, the then AIADMK joint co-coordinator Edappadi Palaniswami and the coordinator OPS formed an alliance with the BJP. But, the alliance did not win even a single seat in the LS poll.
Similarly, the AIADMK-BJP did not form the government in the 2021 assembly elections. Former AIADMK minister CV. Shanmugam had said that ''we lost because of the BJP''.
At one point, BJP state president Annamalai had criticized Jayalalithaa with harsh words. This angered the AIADMK. Subsequently, when Annamalai spoke about Anna, the DMK and AIADMK parties got angry. They criticized Annamalai severely.
It was then that Jayakumar met the press on September 18, 2023 and informed ''we are no longer in alliance with the BJP.'' He had strongly criticized the BJP as the party that competes with NOTA.
Then the AIADMK-BJP alliance broke down. Following this, Edappadi Palaniswami kept saying that there was no alliance with the BJP in the 2026 elections.
Whenever he was asked about the alliance in the press conference, he used to ask the question, "We have already said that there is no alliance with the BJP.''
Similarly, Jayakumar said ''AIADMK will never tie up with the BJP.'' But, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was the only one who had predicted that the BJP-AIADMK alliance would emerge.
It has now become true. Amit Shah himself has confirmed it in the presence of Edappadi Palaniswami.
Edappadi Palaniswami spoke against the three-language policy, the Waqf Amendment Act, NEET exam, stoppage of funds to Tamil Nadu. How can he now take to the stage of a coalition election campaign and criticize it?
"Policies are different, alliances are different. All this is normal in politics," Edappadi Palaniswami has already said.
With the BJP-AIADMK alliance confirmed, will Vijay-led TVK contest alone? or form an alliance? If such an alliance is formed, which parties will join it? Will NTK leader Seeman contest alone? Which alliance is PMK going to join? With many such questions, the Assembly election field in Tamil Nadu has already started heating up!
