Attending the meeting of ICAR-Agri Innovative Directors held in Delhi, BJP farmers wing state president GK Nagaraj appealed to the Centre to supply coconut oil instead of palmoil in ration shops to help coconut growers, save forex which went for buying palmoil, and protect public health.
He said palmoil is imported from countries including Indonesia,Thailand Malaysia for 70% of cooking oil consumption. It increases forex outflow from India. Due to lack of manpower and improper water management in Tamil Nadu, farmers have switched over to coconut farming.
In TamilNadu, more than two crore coconut trees existed. But, the ryots faced problems due to fall in prices of coconut. It has caused serious economic problems . So, the ICAR-Agri Innovative can recommend to the Centre to simply coconut oil as an alternative to palm oil for cooking in ration shops across India.
In response to this, ICAR-Agri Innovative CEO Dr. Praveen Malik IAS said that a committee will soon be sent to Tamil Nadu to consider the subject and take a decision as it promotes self-reliance, sale of coconut oil and save forex.
