On the occasion of Maram Thangasamy Memorial Day, organized by the Cauvery Calling Movement today (16/09/2024), 1,67,828 saplings were planted in agricultural lands across Tamil Nadu.
Thiru Maram Thangasamy, from Pudukkottai district, was a pioneer and role model in planting trees. This year, saplings were planted in 86 agricultural fields across 37 districts in Tamil Nadu, covering a total area of 691 acres and amounting to 1,67,828 saplings.
The Cauvery Calling Movement continues to support farmers in practising tree-based agriculture to fulfil Mr Thangasamy's vision.
To date, Isha has distributed 11 crore trees to farmers. Last year, 1.12 crore trees were planted in Tamil Nadu.
This year, the target is to plant 1.21 crore trees in Tamil Nadu, and so far, 47.35 lakh trees have been distributed.
Alongside environmental benefits, farmers can also improve their economic conditions by planting valuable timber trees such as teak, malai vembu, karumaru, vengai, manjal kadambu, sandalwood, red sandalwood, kumizhi, and mahogany, which are provided at a cost of Rs. 3 each.
By planting and cultivating these high-value timber trees on agricultural lands, farmers can increase their income.
On December 22, a special seminar titled "Farming Among Trees! Great Income!" will be organized by Isha’s Cauvery Calling Movement. In this seminar, farmers can learn techniques for intercropping with timber trees.
