The Central Government’s financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the 41 people who lost their lives in the Karur stampede has been credited to their bank accounts at midnight on Friday.
The tragic incident occurred on September 27 during a public campaign rally of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay in Karur, where a massive crowd led to a deadly stampede. A total of 41 people, including children, were killed, and over 110 others sustained injuries. Following the incident, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Karur with a central team to meet the bereaved families and injured persons.
During her visit, the Central Government announced ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of those who died and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Family members confirmed receiving SMS alerts from banks late Friday night, indicating that the relief funds had been successfully credited to their accounts. Meanwhile, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, had earlier provided ₹20 lakh each to the bereaved families as party assistance. According to party sources, nearly all affected families have received the amount, with two cases pending due to documentation verification.
In the Tamil Nadu Assembly, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) criticized the ruling DMK government, claiming the stampede could have been avoided with proper planning and crowd control. Responding to the allegations, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin blamed organizational lapses during the TVK’s campaign event for the tragedy.
Following multiple petitions demanding an impartial probe, the Supreme Court has now ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation into the stampede, citing the need for transparency and accountability in the probe.
