Chemo Ports offer Safety & Comfort to Cancer Patients during therapy: Experts

Physicians concerned about cancer patients’ well-being amidst frequent hospitals visits for their therapy sessions are highly recommending chemo ports to patients to minimise their hospital visits that could put their health at added risk, especially in the wake of the recent Covid 19 pandemic.

For cancer patients, undergoing chemotherapy involves multiple intravenous infusions of medications over time. A chemo port is a small device implanted under the skin that is attached to a vein in the chest to deliver chemotherapy drugs to the body. Without a port, a new intravenous (IV) needle would need to be placed each and every time you have chemo that can be of much discomfort to the patient. Additionally, When an I.V is used, medications are more likely to leak (extravagate) into the tissues surrounding patients’ hand or arm. In such instances chemoports can be extremely beneficial at multiple levels and offer much ease to them in their daily life routinem say cancer specialists.

Speaking on the significance of chemo ports, Dr. P. Arul Raj, HOD, Dept. of Surgical Oncology, GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore said, “ Ports can support in easy administration of the chemo drugs since it allows for easier access to the veins and spare the patient of the discomfort of undergoing multiple needle pricks each time. Physicians are now increasingly suggesting chemo ports to ensure the safety and convenience of their patients at all times.”
