Children Unite to Complete Sadako’s Dream of a Thousand Cranes

In a heartfelt tribute to peace and humanity, children from the Lakshman Iyer Memorial Students Hostel in Gobichettipalayam, along with others from different regions, are coming together to complete the thousand paper cranes once begun by Sadako Sasaki — the young girl from Hiroshima whose story became a timeless emblem of hope.

Sadako Sasaki was just twelve when she began folding paper cranes from her hospital bed after the Hiroshima atomic bombing. She believed that completing a thousand cranes would grant her wish for healing and peace. Though she passed away before reaching her goal, her act of faith continues to inspire millions around the world.

Now, decades later, children from Gobichettipalayam will pick up where Sadako left off, folding cranes that carry messages of peace, compassion, and remembrance. Each fold, guided by their small hands, will serve as a silent prayer for a world free from war and suffering.

Leading this initiative is Thiyaga Sekar, an origami artist who has devoted more than twenty years to mastering and teaching the art of paper folding. Through the Peace of Paper Studio initiative, he will guide the children in transforming simple sheets of paper into beautiful symbols of hope and unity.

Once completed, the thousand cranes will be sent to the Peace Monument in Hiroshima, carrying with them the spirit of goodwill from the children of Tamil Nadu to the children of Japan — a message that transcends generations and borders.

Organized by the Cuckoo Movement for Children, this event stands as a gentle reminder that even the simplest acts, when done with love and purpose, can shape a more peaceful world.
