Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday inaugurated the 127th flower show at the government botanical garden in the city. A grand display of sculptures based on Ponniyin Selvan novel was erected with flowers at the show.
Due to summer vacation, thousands of tourists have been visiting the district on a regular basis.
The district administration along with the horticulture department has been organizing various events to keep them engaged.
This year, the summer carnival began on May 3 with a vegetable exhibition. It was followed by three other exhibitions – perfume exhibition, rose exhibition and the flower show.
The 127th flower show is the main event of the carnival, and it was inaugurated by the Chief Minister himself. He along with his wife Durga Stalin visited the exhibition. Ministers MP Swaminathan, and MRK Panneerselvam, MP A Raja, district collector Lakshmi Bhavya Thanneeru, former minister Ramachandran and others were present during the inauguration.
About 275 varieties of flowers were displayed in the exhibition, and over 40,000 pots have been arranged in various colors on the decorative stage of the garden.
This year, flower decorations have been made based on the theme of the Ponniyin Selvan novel. Sculptures of the kings, their palaces, elephants and soldiers were exhibited.
In particular, the entrance to the palace has been set up in a grand manner with 1.30 lakh flowers.
Subsequently, structures including a palace shape and a throne have been placed. structures such as a swan and a flower waterfall from a tomb have been created with 50,000 flowers.
Thousands of people visited the flower show on the first day. The exhibition will go on till May 25. About 500 police personnel were deployed to prevent untoward incidents. A local holiday has been announced in the district on Thursday in view of the inaugural ceremony of the flower show.
