CM leaves a mark in Varsities' history

Tamil Nadu had filed a case against Governor RN Ravi for sitting on 10 bills that were passed twice by the state assembly, and then sending it for President’s assent, before the Supreme Court. While disposing of the case, a bench comprising judges JP Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan condemned the Governor for his inaction. The bench made it clear that the Governor does not have veto power, and he must act as per Article 200 of the Indian Constitution. It is illegal for him to sit on the bills for such a long time without giving his assent, and he has no right to withhold his assent if the same bill was passed twice in the assembly, the court clarified.
The Supreme Court verdict has paved the path for the Chief Minister to become the Chancellor of the state-run universities. Following the historic verdict, the state government has issued orders to implement the laws with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday chaired a meeting with vice-chancellors and registrars of all the varsities in the state at his office in Chennai. Discussions regarding steps to be taken to improve higher education were held during the meeting. It is for the first time the Chief Minister is chairing a meeting with the vice-chancellors. The move has gained the attention of other states as well.
Speaking at the meeting, Stalin made it clear that only intellectual teachings should take place at educational institutions rather than spreading irrational ideas and myths. “The basis of education is to refine knowledge, and it is the primary duty of the heads of the institutions to teach equality and social justice to students. There is no place in educational institutions to spread ideas or activities that incite division among students. No compromise on this will be accepted,” he added.
It will not be an exaggeration to say that Stalin’s intellectual speech in the meeting has provided new impetus to the vice-chancellors and registrars of the universities. Tamil Nadu is the forerunner in higher education development. Now, a new path has been laid to accelerate and rise it without any obstacles. The meeting is the first imprint to take the institutions towards development. May the glory of the Chief Minister continue as the Chancellor of the universities.
