Stalin on Tuesday announced that the state government would establish a centenary memorial for leader L Elayaperumal who fought for the welfare of Dalit people, in Chidambaram.
Stalin remembered that it was only because of the efforts of the Elayaperumal two-tumbler system had come to an end in Chidambaram. Stalin informed the assembly that his centenary anniversary would be celebrated in the state in a grand manner.
Born at Kattumannarkoil in Cuddalore district on June 26, 1924, Elayaperumal fought for the welfare of Dalit people and he was the first president of All India untouchable eradication committee. He also served as the president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee in 1979. He served the nation as an MP for about 20 years. He died on September 9, 2005.
Stalin made the announcement under rule 110 at the assembly and TNCC president KS Alagiri thanked him. In a statement, Alagiri said, “Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has announced his decision to establish a memorial for Elayaperumal who was a three-time MP and president of TNCC, in Chidambaram and celebrate his birthday in a grand manner. He worked hard for the welfare of Dalit people. I am really happy learning about the announcement. I have worked with him for over 50 years.”
He further said, “He lived a life to ensure social harmony and for the upliftment of Dalit people. He was a guardian of social justice. I am really happy to know that the state government has been taking efforts to spread the words about the leader.”
