Tiruvannamalai District Collector D Bhaskara Pandian recently visited the Cauvery Women's Self-Help Group in Durinjapuram Panchayat Union, Vadandapatti Panchayat, to inspect the preparation of traditional spices supplied to schools for the Chief Minister's Free Breakfast Scheme. Under the "Nirainthathu Manam" program, spices are made from quality turmeric sourced from Polur, pepper from Javvadumalai, and other natural ingredients. These spices ensure the quality of the breakfast served to students.
In Tiruvannamalai district, 74,158 students from 1,684 schools receive 3,262 kg of spices monthly. The spices are distributed to school cooking centres, and the initiative generates a net profit of Rs. 35 per kg for women's self-help groups, resulting in Rs. 1,14,170 in total profits across 18 districts. The program will extend to the mid-day meal scheme in 2,027 schools, benefiting 2,05,976 students in the district.
The District Collector emphasised that all mid-day meal workers should use these spices to enhance the food quality. Members of the Cauvery Women's Self-Help Group expressed their satisfaction, noting that the initiative provides them with a stable income of Rs. 10,000 per family per month by producing and supplying pure, traditional spices to government and government-aided schools.
Project Director (Women's Programme) Saranya Devi and other officials participated in the event.
