Coal mining will not be allowed in delta region: CM

The state government would never permit coal mining in the delta region, Chief Minister MK Stalin told the state assembly on Wednesday. The special call attention motion against establishing of coal mines in delta region was moved by the DMK MLA TRB Raja in the  assembly.

Speaking on the motion, Raja said that the union government has floated tender without bringing it to the knowledge of the state government. “Immediately after the information reached the ears of the Chief Minister, he wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi sternly opposing the project. Residents of Delta districts are in utter shock,” he said.

Former AIADMK minister Kamaraj said that AIADMK has insisted on taking all the steps to prevent setting up of coal mines in delta regions.   Congress MLA Selvaperunthagai said, “Congress strongly opposes the establishment of coal mines in delta districts. The union government’s announcement would snatch away the livelihood of the residents of delta districts.

MK Stalin Said

The union government has acted independently without consulting the state government and it is in violation of the constitution. Considering the Chief Minister’s opposition, the union government should immediately withdraw the project.”

PMK MLA GK Mani said, “PMK strongly opposes the establishment of coal mines in delta districts. I thank the Chief Minister for writing against the project. To prevent implementation of such projects, the region was declared a protected agricultural zone.”

VCK MLA Sindanaiselvan said that the Chief Minister has written to the Prime Minister considering the emotions of the farmers. Speaking on the motion, industries minister Thangam Thennarasu said, “The union government has acted autonomously without getting opinion from the state government. The Chief Minister MK Stalin has acted quickly and written to the Prime Minister expressing his concerns.

State government officials also interacted with their counterparts and requested them not to proceed further on the project.  The Tamil Nadu government would never approve the coal mine project in delta districts.”
It is funny to see BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan speak about privatization, he said, adding that the previous AIADMK government had left out several districts from the protected agricultural zone.

Replying to the motion, Chief Minister MK Stalin said, “I was shocked to know about the coal mine project. Immediately I wrote to the Prime Minister. Union minister had assured TR Balu that appropriate action would be taken on the letter. The union government has acted autonomously without consulting the state government. I am from a delta district.  I would never allow the establishment of a coal mine there.”
