Compensation will be arranged from the government for banana crops damaged by wind and rain in Erode district, Collector Rajagopal Sunkara said.
The Erode District Farmers Grievance Meeting was held at the Collector's office on Friday under the chairmanship of Collector Rajagopal Sunkara. District Revenue Officer S. Shanthakumar and Joint Director of Agriculture M. Tamilchelvi were present.
Details of the demands of the farmers who participated in the meeting:
Water should be released for a total of 6 irrigations in the Keezhbhavani canal. However, water is being released only for 5 irrigations. Since the hot summer is high and there are still days left for harvest, water should be released for the 6th irrigation.
The coconut yield has decreased by one-third due to whitefly attack on the coconut. The price of coconut will increase sharply. Steps should be taken to control it.
Once the water is stopped in the right bank irrigation canal of Mettur, the silt and weeds should be removed.
New varieties of peanuts should be provided for the monsoon season crop. The water provided for the 5th irrigation in the Lower Bavani is wasted and is being dumped in the Cauvery as surplus.
The Sakthi sugar mill brings refinery waste in trucks and pours it on agricultural lands and water bodies, affecting groundwater, well water, and water bodies. The Pollution Control Board should prevent this. Solid waste collected in panchayat and city government areas is dumped on water bodies, fields, and public transport routes, causing health problems.
Paddy should be purchased at procurement centers without holidays. Due to the high inflow, paddy bundles are piling up. Those who have taken agricultural loans from nationalized banks, private banks, and microfinance institutions, even when they make regular payments, are threatened by the bank by appointing special agents to collect the loan.
