Former TNCC president and senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan, grandson of Krishnasamy, brother of Periyar, died at Myad Hospital, Chennai at around 11 am on Saturday
He is a current member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, representing the Erode East Assembly constituency. He was admitted to the hospital for lung infection 10 days back.
The 75 year old Elangovan born on December 1948 in Erode. He has 2 sons late E. Thirumahan Everaa, and Sanjay Sampath.
He is survived by wife Varalakshmi and resided at Manapakkam Chennai.
His parents E. V. K. Sampath was former Congress MP and Sulochana Sampath, former ADMK leader and SIDCO chairperson. His grandparent E. V. Krishnasamy is elder brother of Periyar.
He assumed office of East MLA on 10th March 2023 by contesting in the by election caused due to the sudden demise of his son and MLA of the segment Thirumagan Evera. From 1984 to 1989, he represented Sathyamangalam constituency in the district. He was a strong supporter of actor Sivaji Ganesan.
He was President of TNCC from 2014 - 2016
and Minister of State in the Union Ministry of Textiles from 2004-2009 in the Manmohan Singh Cabinet when he was MP of Gobi LS seat in 2004-2009. He faced defeat in Erode LS segment 2009, Tirupur 2014, Krishnagiri 1996 and Theni in 2019, assembly poll in Bavanisagar (independent) in 1989,
Erode Venkata Krishnasamy Sampath Elangovan was a good orator like his father who was one among 5 leaders who formed DMK. His father quit DMK after some difference of opinion with DMK founder Annadurai, formed his own party and later joined Congress.
Elangovan's controversial speeches against the late CM Kalaignar, Jayalalithaa, Vasan, Chidambaram, Modi and many leaders created much flutter in the state many times. So, he was at the media limelight always.
After the death of his son Thirumahan Evera, Elangovan sought Erode East seat for his second son Sanjay Sampath in the bypoll citing his ill health. He suffered with corona twice.
Since then he faced asphyxiation problem. But the CM MK Stalin forced him to contest in the bypoll. The bypoll itself became a major controversy at all India level due to violation of poll norms blatantly by lodging the voters in the sheds and giving them money daily.
Thirumahan Evera tried his best to arrange house site pattas to over 20000 families in the segment and the CM assured to fulfill his demand while canvassing vote for Elangovan. Now, almost, he fulfilled that promise. In that aspect, the locals got much relief.
But, they were in deep grief due to the demise of Thirumahan and Elangovan within a short span of becoming MLAs of the segment.
