Councillors question allotment of Rs 60 lakh Corpn fund for general election

Councillors question allotment of Rs 60 lakh Corpn fund for general election

When AIADMK members Thangamuthu and Surampatti Jagadeesan asked why the Corporation spent Rs 60 lakh for general election, the commissioner Janaki Ravindran explained it was given by the Corporation to create permanent infrastructure in Corporation schools where the election booths were set up.

At the Corporation council meeting held on Tuesday, the members questioned why the civic body spent huge money for the election commission, while the civic body itself faced fund constraint for its work. The amount can be spent for corporation election and not for assembly election, they felt. The commissioner, however, explained as per the rule alone, the then commissioner sanctioned the fund. They said for sanctioning old age pension, the revenue department sought the BPL No of applicant. The commissioner  replied that already the numbers were given. If one wanted a new No, it would be considered. They complained about non maintenance of public parks, each was created at a cost of Rs 60 lakh. They suggested appointment of watchmen for the parks.

She replied the residents association should maintain it. The members complained about growing stray dog  menace, overflowing of sewage from UGD and irregular supply of water under the Uratchkottai water project. DMK member Adhi Sridhar complained about sales of liquor at any time in his ward, functioning of shawarma shops without permission, encroachment of corporation land by forest department, poor quality of public toilet, dyeing of fish in the Ganiravuthar Kulam tank and non holding of zonal committee meetings of the Corporation.
