A wild elephant attacked and killed a couple who went to pick sundakai in the forest area near Bhavanisagar on Thursday.
Boothikuppam forest village is located in Bhavanisagar dam area of Erode district. Chondha Nanjan (75) and Thulasiyammal (70) husband and wife lived in Poothikuppam village. It is located next to Vilamundi forest area under Sathyamangalam tiger reserve. Every day, both of them used to go into the forest to pick and collect sundakai. As usual on Thursday, when the duo were picking sundakai at a place called Val Mokkai in the Vilamundi Forest, a wild elephant standing in the bush suddenly attacked them with its trunk and trampled them, killing them on the spot. Hearing the screams of the two, the people of the area went into the forest and saw the wild elephant roaming around in the same area that had attacked both Nanjan and Tulsiammal. They immediately informed the Vilamundi Forest Department and Bhavanisagar police about this. The forest department and the police who rushed to the spot chased away the wild elephant and recovered the bodies of the two and put them in an ambulance and sent them to Sathyamangalam Government Hospital. It is noteworthy that two years ago, a wild elephant attacked and killed three people who were on a wildlife survey in the forest area. Now, similar incident in the same area has caused tragedy in the area.
