Dead fish floating in Bhavanisagar dam in Erode

Dead fish floating in Bhavanisagar dam in Erode

Bhavanisagar Dam is the main source of drinking water for the people of Erode district. The main catchment area of the Bhavanisagar Dam, which has a capacity of 105 feet, is the Nilgiri Hills. 2.50 lakh acres of agricultural lands of Erode, Tirupur and Karur districts will be irrigated through the Dam. The water flow to the dam is decreasing due to lack of rainfall in the catchment area of the Nilgiris for the past few months. As of this morning, the water level of the dam has dropped to 45.60 feet. On the same day last year, the water level in it was 83 feet. As a result, the Bhavanisagar dam's reservoir area looks with slush. As the water level continues to decrease, fish are floating dead in the  Dam. Due to this, the area smells bad.  5 cubic feet of water has been released for irrigation by the Kilpavani Canal. Water opened to Kalingarayan Canal, Thadapally - Arakankottai Irrigation has been stopped. At present only 200 cubic feet of water is released into Bhavani river for drinking water schemes. Farmers are worried as the water level in the dam continues to decrease, there is a risk of drinking water shortage in Erode district.
