Powerloom owners/weavers said that since the order for free dhoti saree production in Tamil Nadu has not been issued and yarns for such production were not given for the past two months, power loom owners lost employment opportunities.
In this regard, Suresh, the state president of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Powerloom Owners' Associations, said:
In Tamil Nadu, in order to protect the livelihood of power loom owners and workers, the government provides orders for free dhoti sarees production and supplies them through fair price shops every year for poor during the Pongal festival.
For this, an order for free dhoti saree production is being given every year. Following this, this year, for the first time, an order for free dhoti saree production at an estimated cost of Rs. 680 crore was given in advance last April. But since the government has not yet provided the yarns for the production of free dhoti sarees, a situation has arisen where power loom workers are losing employment.
Last year, the government order to start the production of free dhoti sarees came late in view of the parliamentary elections, and it was not possible to complete the production of free dhoti sarees by December last year.
As a result, 32 lakh sarees and 31 lakh dhotis were kept in stock. Therefore, this year, the government set a target of producing 1.42 cr dhotis and 1.42 cr sarees after deducting the existing stock though the total need is1.77 crore dhotis and 1.77 cr sarees. The government action will create a situation where weavers will not have employment opportunities in the production of free dhoti sarees for two months. So, the government should immediately issue an order for the production of 1 crore 77 lakh free dhoti sarees and supply yarns for such production.
