Farmers have demanded that water be released for lower Bhavani irrigation before August 15 as there is sufficient water in the Bhavanisagar dam.
A district-level agricultural grievance meeting was held at the district collector's office on Friday under the chairmanship of District Collector Rajagopal Sunkara.
Representatives of the farmers' association spoke at the meeting as follows:
K.R.Sudanthirasu: Steps should be taken to correct the decline in coconut production due to high heat, lack of rainfall and disease in Tamil Nadu. The government should directly purchase cassava tubers by determining the appropriate price.
Kuppusamy: There are no people to purchase the harvested paddy. It is getting late. They have sprouted after getting soaked in the rain. In the coming times, the procurement centers should operate in their own buildings with warehouse facilities.
Collector: The locations are being selected so that the paddy procurement centers can operate in their own buildings with security facilities. Since the mills are buying less paddy, we have talked to the Agriculture Secretary and asked them to purchase through the regulated markets. When the Chief Minister comes to Erode on June 11, the Agriculture Secretary will also come. The department officials also responded to the demands of the farmers.
The meeting was attended by Joint Director of Agriculture M. Tamilchelvi, District Collector's PA (Agriculture) C. Lokanathan, Executive Engineer (Agricultural Engineering) Manoharan, Deputy Director of Horticulture M. Gurusaraswathy, Erode Market Committee secretary Savitri and others.
