Coronary artery disease (CAD) is taking an alarming toll on younger adults in India, with recent statistics revealing a 25% increase in cases among people in their 30s and 40s over the past decade.
Drug-eluting balloons (DEBs) represent a major advancement in the management of CAD. These innovative devices combine the mechanical benefits of balloon angioplasty with the targeted delivery of medication. When inflated, the DEB releases medication directly to the inner surface of the artery, which helps to prevent the artery from narrowing again—a common issue following traditional balloon treatments.
Dr P. Shankar, a renowned interventional cardiologist, Preethi Hospital, Madurai says, “Drug-eluting balloons have shown remarkable benefits in treating patients with complex coronary artery disease. For example, I recently treated a 48-year-old patient with a history of multiple stent placements and persistent blockages. Using a DEB, we were able to provide targeted medication directly to the affected area, significantly reducing the risk of further complications. The patient reported a substantial reduction in symptoms and experienced excellent arterial healing, with no signs of restenosis during follow-up. The positive feedback was overwhelming, highlighting a smoother recovery and improved quality of life.”
Dr P. Shankar adds, “In my practice, DEBs have proven effective in managing both new and recurring blockages. This technology is particularly beneficial for patients in India, where the prevalence of CAD is increasing and managing chronic conditions poses a significant challenge.”
