KS Elangovan's grand daughter and late MLA Thirumahan Evara's daughter Samanna, 18, is now one among top 5 stars in the world in the Dressage category in Equestrian. Now, she prepares to take part in Asian Games to be held from Sept 16, 2026 in Japan.
Studying 12th std in Beyond 8 School, Palavakkam, Chennai, she already won 3 international and 20 national awards by participating in the sport in various places. She owned 2 horses to get regular training.
''At the age of 3, I travelled on the horse casually in Kodaikanal. Since then, I got an interest on the sport and started getting training thanks to the motivation of my grandpa and father'', she said.
Due to her vast experience in the sports, she herself could train the horses and also sportspersons. She is also a gymnastic, and football player. Her barathanatyam arangetram held on August 5,2021. But her interest is much on Equestrian, which has 3 different categories-jumping, polo and dressage, which is the oldest sport in the Olympics.
''Of course, it is a costly sport. We spent lakhs of rupees for maintaining horses, training, transporting the horses to various places safely. My aim is to win in the Asian Games and then in Olympics. Both men and women equally participate in the sport in India. Many in South India involve in the sports. The competition held in different age groups'', she informed and thanked her coach Isabel of Austria for her success in the sport.
As Sports Development Authority of TN (SDAT) approved the sport, now, the deputy CM and sports minister Udayanidhi Stalin assured due assistance to the players to take part in the national and international events.
In the last Asian games held in China, India won Gold in the event. Germany is top in the sport in the world.
Her mother Poornima won President's Award for working in Paradesi film as best costume designer in 2013.
Regarding her future dream, she says ''I am belonging to the family of great leaders Periyar and EVK Sampath. I learnt a lot by reading their books. Both- my grandpa and father, grandma Varalakshmi- encouraged my interest on politics.
On their footsteps, I want to become a politician after completing PG in Political Science to continue the legacy of my forefathers in serving people''.
