Former Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) has demanded that the Tamil Nadu government take legal action against neighboring states for blocking water supplies to Tamil Nadu. The call for action came after he paid tribute to the late former mayor Malaravan, who passed away on May 17th. EPS visited Malaravan's house to pay his respects and later spoke to reporters.
Palaniswami praised Malaravan for his contributions to the development of Coimbatore during his tenure as mayor and as a two-term member of the Legislative Assembly. He highlighted the water shortage crisis in Tamil Nadu, worsened by neighboring states constructing barrages that could restrict water flow into Tamil Nadu. Specifically, he mentioned Kerala's construction of a barrage in Idukki district, Karnataka's Meghadadu project, and Andhra Pradesh's attempts to build a barrage at Palaru.
Condemning these efforts, Palaniswami urged the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate legal action to secure the state's water rights. He recalled the measures taken during Jayalalithaa's tenure as Chief Minister, when various barrages were constructed to conserve water. He criticised the current DMK government for allegedly halting these barrage projects and neglecting water management initiatives.
Palaniswami also accused the DMK government of electoral malpractices, claiming systematic cancellation of votes in the ongoing assembly elections. He criticised the Election Commission for its inaction and expressed confidence that the AIADMK would win a total of 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
