EPS files nomination for AIADMK GS post

Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS)filed his nomination to contest in the election for the post of AIADMK’s general secretary, at the party’s headquarters in the city on Saturday. Election officers received his petition.

As nobody else is expected to file their nominations in the election, EPS would be elected as the general secretary of the party without any competition.

The party claimed that the election would be conducted in accordance with the section 20 sub-sections 1(A)(B)(C) of the party by-law.

Following the rise in demand for single leadership in the AIADMK, the party’s general council unanimously elected EPS as the interim general secretary and removed O Panneerselvam (OPS) from the basic membership of the party. For the past nine months, EPS has been leading the party.  

As per the party by-law, the general secretary of the party should be elected by the basic members. To elect EPS as the general secretary, the party had scheduled an election on March 26. AIADMK leaders Pollachi Jayaraman and Nattam Viswanathan were appointed as the election officers of the party.

Scrutinization of the application would

The filing of nomination commenced on Saturday and the window would remain open till 3 pm on Sunday. In a statement, the party asked the cadres who are willing to contest in the election to file their nomination along with a deposit of Rs 25,000 at the party headquarters in the city.  Scrutinization of the application would take place on Monday and the last day to withdraw the nomination is on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, OPS and his supporters have been constantly accusing their rivals of violating the party by-law. After the Supreme Court issued a direction in favour of EPS, OPS’ supporters had approached the High Court challenging the validation of the resolutions passed by the general council and demanding the court to cancel the resolutions. However, the case is still pending before the court.
