The Erode Book Festival is being held at the Erode Chikkaiyah Government Arts and Science College from August 1st to the 12th. A large number of school and college students and their institutions came to the book festival.
Reputed English and Tamil publishers brought quality books for sale in various fields.
Thus, the festival was very useful for them. It gave them an opportunity to choose books related to their higher education and employment. Also, since the teachers came with them, they bought books needed for the school and college libraries. Special discounts were given to schools and colleges and students.
From the first day, those who came to the book festival every day and made a note of the books they needed to buy, bought books with that list.
Most of the people could be seen buying a lot of books on Saturdays and Sundays. The literary meeting of great scholars held at the Chinthanai Arangam every day in the evening was also much crowded.
Low cost books needed: Some years back, the Munnetram publishing house was headquartered in Moscow, Russia. This company printed and sent books at very low prices to instill the habit of reading books in underdeveloped countries and to spread literature and science. Those books, which were of world-class quality with rich paper, neat printing, eye-catching photographs, and thick covers, were sold for just Rs. 5 to Rs. 10.
This publishing house stopped its work after the collapse of the Soviet Union. If only that publishing house existed now, ordinary people and government school children who had just visited the book fair would have taken dozens of books with them.
The reason why Russian writers like Tolstoy, Gorky, Chekhov, Dostoevsky, and Pushkin are so popular in India is because of the Publishing House. Many writers from Tamil Nadu stayed in Russia, translated hundreds of books in different languages, printed them there, and sent to India. Now, lack of such a system is really a loss to people, many rued.
