Erode East by-poll: 55% polling recorded till 1 pm

Erode East by-election has recorded 45% voters turnout till 1 pm on Monday. The district election officer Krishnanunni has announced that the election  has been taking place in a peaceful manner since morning.
Amid much expectations, polling kick-started at 7 am in the Erode East by-election and voters had already formed a queue in front of the polling stations.

The polling will end at 6 pm. Following the demise of Congress MLA Thirumagan Eevera, the constituency fell vacant. The Election Commission in kid-January scheduled the by-election on February 27.  The former union minister  and the deceased MLA’s father EVKS Elangovan was announced as the Congress candidate.

AIADMK announced KS Thennarasu as its candidate for the by-poll after the Supreme Court directed AIADMK’s general council to select one of the candidates announced by its two factions.  While Navaneethan was announced as NTK’s candidate, Anand was announced as DMDK’s candidate. As many as 77 candidates are competing in the by-poll.

Personnel  along

 The constituency has about 2.27 lakh voters - 1.11 lakh men and 1.16 lakh women. Election officials have set up 238 booths at 52 places.  As many as 1,206 officials were roped in for the election duty.  About 2,500 police personnel  along with five companies of paramilitary and four companies of Tamil Nadu special task force were deployed in the region for security purpose.

As of 9 am, the constituency has recorded about 10.10% of voters turnout i.e., 22,973 voters had casted their votes. Till 11 am, about 27.89 of voters turnout i.e., 63,469 voters had casted their votes. The officials had identified that five default EVMs during the mock poll and replaced them with the new ones.
