A fire broke out at a car dealership on Ranganathapuram main road near Sulur early this morning. The dealership, run by Praveen Kumar from Sivananda Colony, Coimbatore, has been in operation for the past 10 years. The company specialises in selling new cars and repairing old ones.
Yesterday, more than 70 cars were parked at the dealership. After the night shift ended, employees locked up and left.
A sudden fire broke out at 3 AM today, quickly spreading to the parked cars and burning them to the ground.
Balasubramani, who was on night security duty, was startled by the fire He immediately informed the management and alerted neighbours for help.
Night shift workers from nearby companies and local residents gathered to help extinguish the fire.
Firefighters from Sulur Fire Station arrived quickly to control the fire. Kannampalayam Municipal Council President Pushpalatha Rajagopal and Coimbatore District Assistant Fire Officer Alagarswamy personally oversaw the firefighting efforts.
After several hours, the fire was fully extinguished. However, over 15 cars were completely destroyed. The quick action of the staff allowed for the safe removal of more than 50 cars, which escaped damage.
The fire caused the roof of the building to collapse and damaged the car repair area, car sales section, storage room, and computer room.
Traffic on the road was also affected as police managed security and set up an alternative route for vehicles.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown. The Sulur police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
Fortunately, since the fire occurred at night, no employees were present, preventing any loss of life.
