An Indian Gaur (Bison) tragically died after falling from a height during a fight in a private estate near Semmanatham village in Yercaud, Salem district.
The incident occurred in the morning on Tuesday when two Indian gaurs engaged in a fierce fight at Olakkodu, a locality near Semmanatham. One of the wild gaurs estimated to be about 7-year-old accidentally slipped and fell from a 10-foot-high ledge suffering severe injuries.
Concerned locals reported the incident to the Yercaud Forest Department. A rescue team led by Murugan,Yercaud Forest Range Officer along with five Forest Department staff including Tamilarasan and Sakthivel, arrived at the scene. A veterinarian, Dr. Pandian also joined the team. Using a crane, they managed to lift the injured animal from the roadside and transported it to a nearby private estate for medical treatment.
Despite a seven-hour-long effort to save the animal, the buffalo succumbed to its injuries around 5 PM. After conducting a post-mortem examination, the veterinary team buried the buffalo in a nearby forest area.
