Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi attended a Hindi month celebration by Doordarshan (DD) Tamil, sparking controversy when the line refering to Dravidian country, "Dekkanum Adhilsirandha Dravida nal Thirunadum," was omitted from the Tamil Thai Vazhthu (Invocation Song). The incident drew flak from the ruling and opposition parties while tge Chief Minister M.K. Stalin criticized the governor, questioning his stance on Dravidian identity and demanding his removal. The Governor’s House and DD Tamil apologized, but the issue remains contentious. The Governor responded, accusing Stalin of making false, racist comments. Stalin replied, stating the governor could have corrected the omission during the event itself.
In the first place it was not appropriate for DD Tamil to organise a festival only for Hindi in Tamil Nadu as it tantamounts to neglecting Tamil. Will they conduct a festival in other languages including Tamil? As the question was raised and turned into a debate, the program organizers should have excercised caution.
This incident shows that when a controversial opinion emerges in a public place, the solution should have been found and addressed immediately on that platform itself.
As the mistake is immediately known, shouldn't Governor R.N Ravi have understood its seriousness and corrected it at that moment? If that had been done, the matter would have ended there instead of a series of explanations and counter explantions. There would not have been this climactic clash between Governor & Chief Minister. There however is a lesson to be learnt from this avoidable episode.
