Governor’s slogan disrupts healthy environment in colleges

Governor’s slogan disrupts healthy environment in colleges

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has sparked another row by asking students of a private engineering college in Madurai to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. With no other choice, the students obeyed. Despite holding one of the most influential government posts, Ravi’s behavior resembles that of a religious leader.
It was only last week that the Governor was condemned by the Apex Court of the country. The Supreme Court delivered a historic verdict in a case filed against him by the Tamil Nadu government. The Court said that it was illegal to sit on 10 bills, passed twice by the state assembly, for a long time before sending them for the President’s assent.
It is unacceptable that Ravi asked the students to raise a communal slogan at a function that took place in an educational institution. It looks like he has forgotten that India is a secular country where people of different religious groups live in peace and harmony. Ravi’s behaviour has disrupted the healthy environment prevailing in the state. It is highly condemnable. Even BJP and RSS leaders cannot support him outright.
If the Supreme Court’s verdict had bothered him even a bit, he would have expressed regret and apologized. Instead, he not only displayed a carefree attitude, he also attempted, once again, to undermine the unity of the state. People have been constantly condemning his activities and demanding his ouster from the Raj Bhavan. The demands for his ouster have been growing stronger with each passing day. CPI president Mutharasan has even called him a ‘sinister’.
He got numerous opportunities to correct himself and work for the welfare of the state. But he did not pay attention to any of those. Now, he is hanging by a thread as the slogan ‘Go back Ravi’ has become louder. It is advisable to prevent a situation where students and the public take to the streets demanding Ravi’s ouster.
