As many as 72 students of the Raja Design government school at Gingee in the district were injured after a school teacher brutally attacked them with a cane. Following the complaint, the teacher was suspended from service. The accused teacher is identified as K Nandagopal, who is teaching physics at the school and also serves as the deputy principal of the school.
According to sources, Nandagopal had conducted a class test for Class XII students on Tuesday and as many of the students had failed to perform well in the test, the irked teacher started beating the students with a cane. Many of the students had sustained injuries. Alerted by the students about the incident, their parents picketed the school on Wednesday and staged a protest demanding action against the teacher.
Shortly, Gingee police officials along with tahsildar, panchayat union president and town panchayat president reached the school and held a talk with the parents. The complaint in turn was communicated to the district collector D Mohan who immediately issued orders to suspend the accused teacher. Based on his instructions, the chief educational officer S Krishnapriya suspended him. The CEO has inspected the school to inquire into the matter.
