The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had announced that the Northeast monsoon commenced today in the state. As extremely heavy rains were predicted, IMD has issued an orange alert to the state. Experts said that the Sitrang cyclone had delayed the onset of Northeast monsoon which was earlier predicted to commence on October 20 and the delay has nothing to do with the intensity of the rainfall.
The monsoon is started in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The rainfall is expected to last till November 4. The state is expected to receive an average rainfall ie., 88 to 112% of its average rainfall.
On October 31 and November 1 , heavy to extremely heavy rains are predicted in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Northern part of Tamil Nadu. IMD has issued an orange warning to the state.
In 2021, the state received about 71 cm of rainfall in November and December against its average 45 cm. While the state has received 59% more rainfall than its average, Chennai has received 74% more rainfall than its average. Similarly, the state has received more rainfall than its average in 2019 and 2020. Experts predict that this year’s monsoon would also follow in a similar fashion.
