Investigation on the Delhi High Court judge is going on well

Investigation on the Delhi High Court judge is going on well

A sudden fire broke out at the house of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Verma in Lutyens' Delhi at midnight on the 20th. During the incident, bundles of rupee notes were recovered in a half-burnt state from the storeroom inside the house. The discovery of such a large amount of money in the official residence of a judge has caused shock in the judiciary.
Following this, the Supreme Court Collegium directed Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar to conduct a preliminary inquiry and submit a report. Additionally, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna constituted a three-judge inquiry committee. In response to the allegations, the Supreme Court transferred Judge Yashwant Verma to the Allahabad High Court and ordered that no new cases be assigned to him.
Meanwhile, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar submitted his report, and Justice Yashwant Verma presented his defense the day before yesterday. These documents have now been published on the Supreme Court website.
Justice Yashwant Verma has publicly denied all allegations, claiming that there was no conspiracy, that no cash was present in the room where the fire broke out, and that the burnt notes were not disposed of. His denial has sparked widespread debate.
However, a video posted on the Supreme Court website yesterday shows a firefighter removing burnt objects, with a pile of half-burnt cash visible nearby. This raises questions about why the fire department has issued contradictory statements regarding the incident.
At a time when corruption is rampant across the country, the judiciary remains the only refuge for the people. However, such incidents tarnish the reputation of the judiciary and erode public trust in the institution.
That said, it is commendable that the judiciary has demonstrated transparency by conducting an internal investigation and publishing evidence—including videos and photographs of burnt currency notes—on the Supreme Court website for public scrutiny.
If such a large sum of unexplained money had been found in the house of an ordinary citizen, how would the law have responded? The same standard must apply to a judge, ensuring that justice is served equally. Only then will people continue to have faith in the judicial system.
The investigation is progressing in the right direction, and there is no doubt that the dignity of the courts will be upheld. The Supreme Court’s proceedings reflect this commitment!
