IT companies refuse job offers for drug addicts

Companies operating in ‘Technopark’, located in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, have taken a stance against drug users. They have decided not to recruit those who use drugs.
The practice adopted by IT companies operating in the state capital shows that good educational qualifications alone are not enough to get a job; good and clean habits matter too.
GTECH, a consortium of 250 IT companies operating in Kerala, has taken a stance against drug users in recruitment and has started implementing it. GTECH is firm that drug users will not be considered for employment. It has been made mandatory for those applying for jobs in these companies to undergo a medical test for drug use and provide a certificate.
The government has been educating the public about the ill effects of consuming drugs, focusing on rural and illiterate people. But we have never thought that awareness needs to be created among educated youth as well.
However, now the situation has gone beyond the stage of awareness campaigns. It is commendable that Kerala’s GTECH companies are stepping forward, signaling that the time has come to take action.
If only all companies across the country diligently take this stance, thousands of youths can be rescued from drug addiction and put on a good path. Remember Valluvar's word that effort pays off.
