Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has announced his unconditional support to the Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan in the upcoming Erode East by-poll.
Following the demise of Congress MLA Thirumagan Eevera due to cardiac arrest on January 4, the Erode East constituency fell vacant and the Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled a by-poll on February 27 to fill the vacancy. After the DMK had allocated the seat to the Congress as per poll pact, the deceased MLA’s brother Sanjay Sampath was widely expected to be announced as the candidate. But the Congress had announced the deceased’s MLA father and union minister EVKS Elangovan as their candidate. He is contesting in the assembly election almost after 35 years.
Kamal said
Earlier, he had met the DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and other party leaders and sought their support for the by-poll.
He also met the Makkal Needhi Maiyam chief Kamal Haasan and sought his support as his party had secured close to 10,000 votes in the 2021 assembly election. During which, Kamal had assured him of conveying his party’s decision after holding a meeting with district secretaries.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, Kamal said that his party would extend unconditional support to EVKS Elangovan in the by-poll. He said, “I and my partymen would do everything in our power for the victory of the Congress candidate. Arunachalam is appointed as the party’s election coordinator. However, this cannot be considered as our decision in the parliamentary election.”
