Leaders of 31 outfuts including AIADMK, TMC, VCK, Naam Thamizhar Katchi, BSP, NCP, various dalit parties, etc paid homage to the portrait of freedom fighter Maaveeran Pollan on his 217th death anniversary at a function held at the community hall at Modakurichi on Sunday.
Heading the function, Pollan Peravai and Arunthathiyar Ilaignar Peravai state president Vadivel Raman said Pollan, a chieftain of Dheeran Chinnamalai, was shot dead by British at Nallamangapalayam, near Arachalur, where the present government bought 44 cent of land to construct a memorial for him. The CM MK Stalin allotted Rs 1.82 cr for construction of the memorial. So, the government should take steps to construct the memorial without delay.
The death anniversary function was being held from 2018 as per the court order, obtained by the Peravai. So, it was observed as government function and the previous rule issued a GO to celebrate his birthday on Dec 28 every year. But, the unfortunately, the Collector, SP, ministers and MLAs did not attend the death anniversary function on Sunday though all of them were attending similar function for Dheeran Chinnamalai held in his memorial at Odanilai in nearby area every year.
It indicated the prevailing caste discrimination as Pollan was belonging to Arunthathiyar community, he rued and condemned such discrimination. He wanted holding of government function and distribution of government benefits to poor on the birthday of Pollan on Dec 28 as done during Dheeran Aadi Perukku vizha to be held every year at Odanilai by the government.
AIADMK former minister PC Ramasamy, MLAs KS Thennarasu, Sivasubramaniam, TMC former MLA Vidiyal Sekar, party functionaries Sinthanaiselvan (Thamizhpuligal), Kaniyamuthan, Pavarasu, Siruthai Valluvan (VCK), Selvaraj (Thamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Katchi), Palani (NCP), Seethalakshmi (NTP), Eswaran (BSP), Kamaraj (Aram Makkal Katchi), and many others attended the function.
