On April 22, one of the popular tourist destinations in India – Pahalgam in Anantnag district of Kashmir – was attacked by terrorists While 26 people including two foreigners were killed in the attack, several others were injured. The incident has shaken the country.
An affiliate of Lashkar-e-Taiba, The Resistance Front (TRF), has claimed responsibility for the attack. The organization operating from Pakistan is banned in India. But, for decades now, Pakistan-based terrorist groups have been launching attacks on India. However, the Pakistani government had defended itself, and said that they don’t have anything to do with the attack.
Pakistan's Army Chief General Asim Munir had said that Kashmir is the lifeblood of Pakistan. Within a few days after the remark, an attack was carried out in Pahalgam. Isn’t it evident that the Pakistani government has been supporting the attack. That’s why the central government has taken a decisive step to teach Pakistan a lesson.
To give a befitting reply to them, the Indian government has made five important decisions including the suspension of Indus water treaty signed between the countries in 1960 until Pakistan stops supporting cross-border terrorism, and the immediate closure of the integrated check post in Punjab’s Attari village. The steps taken by the Indian government headed by prime minister Narendra Modi and Home minister Amit Shah are commendable.
The union government has been taking steps to control terrorism, and puts severe pressure on Pakistan that supports terrorism activities. However, there has been a rising public demand to declare Pakistan as a terrorist state under Indian government law. It is advisable to consider the demand. No matter what, terrorist forces that are spreading tension in Kashmir through their extremist activities, should be defeated, and it is high time for that.
All political parties should come together and join forces with the union government to defeat terrorism, and eradicate terrorists by all means.
