A marathon was arranged in Coimbatore on Sept 1 to create awareness among Women on cyber crime.
For the fourth year in succession, We Wonder Woman, a voluntary organization in association with Karpagam University, organized the 5 km marathon.
Executive Trustee of the NGO Subitha Justin and Trustee Shanmugapriya say : With the growing development of information technology, cyber crimes are also increasing in the society. Cyber crimes are also on the rise, especially against women. Even though women are aware, sometimes they are affected without realizing it. Technology is making cybercrimes against women more common.
It is estimated that one in ten girls have experienced cyberbullying since the age of fifteen. It is the most common cyber crime against women. They manipulate women in wrong ways to gain their trust and then take advantage of it. Cyber criminals usually target women and collect their personal and sensitive information like financial details, addresses and private conversations.
Criminals can threaten to expose the sensitive data if victims do not comply with their demands. The police department is very supportive to the victims in such cases. Many victimized women in society are reluctant to report. So, to create awareness among women on cyber crime, the marathon was held from the Coimbatore Nehru Stadium. It proceeded via Avinasi Road Hosur Road, KG Theatre, Racecourse road, Collector Bungalow and again reached Nehru Stadium. All those who participated in the event were given a medal, certificate, T-shirt and breakfast.
