When the DMK came to power in 2021, one of their first bills was to seek exemption for the state from attending the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to get medical admission. The state assembly unanimously passed the NEET exemption bill on September 13. Governor R.N. Ravi rejected it. The bill was again passed in the assembly on February 8, 2022, and sent for the President’s assent through the Governor. The President refused to give his nod to the bill despite submitting all the explanations sought by various Union Ministers.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday held an all-party meeting to discuss the bill. Speaking at the meeting, Stalin said, “Tamil Nadu is a pioneer in the medical sector in India. But the Governor has been playing politics by not approving the NEET exemption bill. The government made all efforts to get the President's approval for it. The A.K. Rajan Committee, formed by the state government, stated that the NEET exam is beneficial only for those who are economically wealthy. We are confident that we can get exemption from the NEET exam if we continue the legal struggle without giving up."
In this meeting, an unanimous resolution was passed to vigorously pursue the case filed by the state government against the NEET exam system in the Supreme Court in July 2023, and to take all legal steps, including filing a new case in the Supreme Court, if necessary, against the Union Government's refusal to approve the draft law.
Ever since the NEET was implemented, pursuing medicine has become a distant dream for rural and poor students who cannot afford to spend a lot of money to get training. It is clear that the NEET examination is only for urban students who have the means to go to training classes.
Just two days ago, Stalin hoisted the victory flag in the legal battle against the Governor. He has obtained a historic verdict in which the Supreme Court itself gave permission to implement 10 bills that the Governor had refused to give his nod.
Now, another arrow has been shot from Stalin’s bow. He has taken up the legal battle against the NEET examination in his hands. The aspiring students and parents also wish to see Stalin win in the battle.
May the day come when the NEET examination, which has claimed the lives of many students, and which is the cause of their loss, will be put to an end.
