People's Movement for Clean Cities programme was launched by Minister of Housing S Muthusamy at the Erode VOC Sports Grounds on Friday.The corporation officials said ''there are currently 1250 cleanliness workers in the civic body. It is far inadequate to meet the needs of growing population.
They are collecting bio degradable and non degradable wastes from house to house by using 250 vehicles, converting them as compost manure and distributing it to farmers free of cost. The corporation, collecting 200 tons of garbage daily in the city, is taking steps to recruit over 250 staff in line with the city's population growth by approaching the government as 15 to 20 percent absenteeism existed among the workers. Garbage bins have been removed to ensure cleanliness in the city.
Now, 70 percent of residents were giving wastes as bio degradable and non degradable.
To create more awareness among them on giving wastes after segregating them, today students rally was also inaugurated by the Minister. He also administered a pledge to them on protecting the sanitation of the city. Under the present programme, mass cleaning work will be done in all local bodies in every 2nd and 4th Saturdays every month.
Public can lodge complaints about sanitary condition in their area to the civic body by using Swachatha App to improve the solid waste management programme of the corporation, they added.
Collector H Krishnanunni, Corporation Mayor Nagarathinam, Commissioner Sivakumar, DMK town secretary Subramaniam, many councillors attended the function.
