Modern treatment introduced for men suffering from enlarged prostate

Prostate health issues are becoming increasingly common in India, with nearly 50% of men expected to experience an enlarged prostate, or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), by the age of 60. Often viewed as a natural part of aging, BPH can cause significant discomfort, including frequent urination and difficulty passing urine.
Traditionally, surgery was the primary treatment for BPH. However, minimally invasive procedures like Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) are now revolutionising prostate care. Dr. Karthik Damodharan, Director of Vascular and Interventional Radiology at MIOT International, described PAE as a breakthrough for men suffering from BPH. “PAE is a minimally invasive treatment that reduces blood supply to the prostate, causing it to shrink. It is safe, precise, and eliminates the need for surgical cuts or prolonged hospital stays, offering relief with minimal disruption to the patient’s life,” he said.
The rising prevalence of BPH is linked to factors such as obesity, stress, and sedentary lifestyles. Dr. Karthik emphasised the importance of awareness, early intervention, and lifestyle changes like regular exercise and a balanced diet. Modern treatments like PAE are enabling men to regain their quality of life without undergoing invasive surgery or lengthy recovery periods.
