Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the Mudhalvar Marundhagams scheme across Tamil Nadu on February 24 to reduce the high cost of medical treatment for the poor and middle-class who rely on private hospitals. In the first phase, 1,000 Mudhalvar Marundhagams were opened across all 38 districts of Tamil Nadu, including 33 locations in Chennai.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation will procure and supply generic medicines for these pharmacies. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu Consumer Cooperative Network will procure and sell other medical equipment, Siddha, Ayurveda, IMPCOPS, TAMPCOL, and Unani medicines, surgical gowns, and nutraceuticals at reduced prices through these outlets.
For comparison, a pill that costs Rs. 70 in private pharmacies is available for Rs. 11 at Mudhalvar Marundhagams. Similarly, patients who spend Rs. 3,000 per month on medicines for chronic illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure in private pharmacies can now get the same medicines for just Rs. 1,000 at Mudhalvar Marundhagams. This means that middle-class families, who spend a significant portion of their income on medicines, will see their expenses reduced by 50% to 75%, a huge relief for many.
This scheme is a major step in improving healthcare accessibility. Chief Minister MK Stalin has introduced and implemented many welfare initiatives for the people of Tamil Nadu, but there is no doubt that Mudhalvar Marundhagams will stand out as a landmark project because of its focus on public health.
Not only patients but also their families have already started appreciating Chief Minister MK Stalin for this life-changing initiative!
