Property tax is an important source of revenue for corporations. Corporation officials are making serious efforts to increase its collection. Some corporations, including Chennai, have been intensifying collection by announcing concessions for property tax payers.
Namakkal city municipal corporation has set a record by ranking first in property tax collection among the 24 corporations in the state in the last financial year 2024-2025.
The state government merged 12 village panchayats with Namakkal municipality and upgraded it to a corporation in 2024. At present, the corporation has 58,795 property tax levies. In August, when the corporation was formed, it was ranked 22nd among the 24 corporations in the state in property tax collection for the financial year. Then, it gradually improved its property tax collection and ranked first at the state level from November 2024 to the end of the current financial year.
Also, the corporation has achieved the property tax collection target worth Rs 14.74 crore set by the 15th Central Finance Commission on March 11, 2025 and became eligible to receive the subsidy for the current year. Since it failed to achieve the target last year, it did not receive the commission subsidy amount. But this year, the Namakkal corporation has proved itself.
Public cooperation is set as the main reason behind this success. The joint efforts of the mayor, deputy mayor, council members, corporation officials and staff contributed significantly to the success.
Thus, Namakkal Corporation stands tall as a role model for all other corporations in Tamil Nadu. It has been working in a way that encourages not only corporations but also all local government bodies such as municipalities, town councils, and panchayats. All those who contributed to the achievement deserve a huge applause.
