Over 1,500 firecracker factories in Tamil Nadu employ over 7 lakh people, with many women working. With frequent blasts occurring in these units, poor people risk their lives for income, leaving families destitute and injured individuals suffering physical damage for life.
Such accidents will be reduced to some extent if the licensees to set up firecrackers plant refrain from illegally subletting out rooms, keep more than the prescribed amount of chemicals in stock, employ more workers than allowed in a particular place, and do not have enough safety equipment.
Government officials, who immediately investigate every accident, continue to say that the plant concerned was operating in violation of regulations and that regulations will be tightened to prevent such incidents from happening again.
Now Tamilnadu government has taken a new initiative. It has been announced that four special level committees have been set up to find out the factories involved in the manufacture of firecrackers in violation of the rules and based on the report submitted by the teams, strict action will be taken against the violating factories and special inspections will be carried out till Diwali.
It is vital that the number of explosions be drastically decreased in the present by swiftly checking the plants, immediately terminating the license in the event that any violations occur, and adopting harsh measures against government officials who fail to conduct a proper inspection within a given time frame. This is something where there should be no place for compromise, and the activities ought to start right away. We won't be able to stop firecracker bursts till then.
The government and owners of the factories have an obligation to safeguard the lives of the people who work in the crackers!
