Mr.Jayachandran S., a noted wildlife conservationist from Ooty, passed away on Friday at 11.00 am.
A recipient of the SanctuaryWild Life Service Award 2017, he was a tireless advocate for the protection of the Nilgiris and Sathyamangalam landscapes in Tamil Nadu's Western Ghats.
Jayachandran founded the Tamil Nadu Green Movement in 1990 to combat unscrupulous industries and the timber mafia. He led campaigns against environmental threats, saving thousands of hectares of forest and preserving rare and endemic species. As the Honorary Secretary of the Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association, he protected the Sigur elephant corridor from unregulated tourism infrastructure development.
According to fellow environmentalists, “Jayachandran also served as a pragmatic problem-solver, helping the Kerala and Tamil Nadu Forest Departments in busting poaching rackets and apprehending poachers. His legacy of courage, dedication, and environmental stewardship will continue to inspire generations.”
