In Bargur Panchayat consists of 33 hill villages, work cards have been issued to 6000 beneficiaries under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The cards were updated every five years. In this situation, only 1000 people have been issued new cards in Bargur panchayat since April 1.
The panchayat office said the remaining 5,000 persons would be issued work cards in a few days. So, most of the hill people were dissatisfied as they waited for a month and were not given work card. In protest againstthis, the affected workers engaged in a wait-and-see protest in front of the Anthiyur Block Development Office on Monday.
Following this, the BDO held talks with those involved in the stir and the strike was called off after an assurance that all would be issued a work card within ten days.CPI functionaries Devaraj, Advocate Krishnakumar, PJ Ganesan, Tungapathiri and about 300 workers from Bargur, Kongadai and Tamaraikarai areas took part in the stir.
