Two omni buses with out-of-state registration numbers operating from Ooty have been confiscated, and three more omni buses were fined for the same issue.
The Tamil Nadu Transport Department had previously issued a notice requiring these buses to be registered in Tamil Nadu, as omni buses with foreign registration numbers operating across the state were causing revenue and road tax issues for the department.
The Omni Bus Owners Association was given a deadline to comply with the registration requirements, which ended the day before yesterday.
Despite this, only about 100 buses have been registered in Tamil Nadu, leaving over 700 buses unregistered. As a result, the Tamil Nadu Transport and Road Safety Commission issued a notification that omnibuses with foreign registration plates violating tourism rules in Tamil Nadu would be confiscated.
Acting on this, RTO Thiagarajan confiscated two buses with registration numbers from other states, including Nagaland, which were traveling from Ooty to destinations like Chennai and Bangalore. Additionally, a fine of Rs. 10,000 was imposed on three other omni buses.
Transport department officials stated that the buses are being confiscated following the Tamil Nadu government’s orders. Initially, buses with Nagaland and Haryana registration numbers are being targeted, and starting today, buses with Pondicherry and Karnataka state registration numbers will also be seized.
