Plea to cancel contract system for sanitation work

Various trade union leaders, led by AITUC secretary S Chinnasamy, met the newly appointed Erode Corporation Commissioner V. Sivakrishnamurthy IAS and pleaded to cancel the contract awarded to Amboy Associates, a company from Salem, for sanitation work. Their demands are: civic body has illegally reduced the minimum wage for workers for the past two months (from August 2023) which is unacceptable.
The reduced wages should be restored immediately. The notified minimum wages fixed by the District Administration (Example: Rs.725/- per day for sanitation workers) should be paid from 1-4-2023. All workers should be paid on the first day of the first month.
As agreed in the talks held on 30-07-2023, full wages should be given for 8 day strike period against outsourcing system of sanitation work from July 7.  It is revealed that Rs.50/-, Rs.100/- are being illegally charged from each worker for monthly preparation of pay lists and up to Rs.25,000/- is being charged through middlemen for providing retirement benefits to the workers.
These illegal activities should be stopped immediately and strict action should be taken against those involved in such illegal activities. Retirement benefits should be given on the day of retirement.
