A request has been made to stop the adulteration of maize flour in starch and sago and fix a suitable price for casava.A petition sent by Tamil Nadu Small and Marginal Farmers Association State President K.R. Suthandrarasu to the Chief Minister said: many ryots of Erode, Salem, Namakkal involve in casava cultivation which is the basic source of revenue of farmers of this district. Its harvest season starts from November and lasts until March. Casava was procured by mills at a cost of Rs 14000 per ton till last August.
It is currently being purchased at a price of Rs.6,500. Due to this the farmers have suffered huge losses.
Until August, 90 kg of sago was sold at a price of Rs 6,500, while starch at Rs 5,500 for a 90 kg bag. Currently, the price has come down to Rs.3,800 for sago and Rs.3,100 for starch flour. Maize and starch flour prices have fallen due to adulteration of maize flour.
The government should set up a special team to take steps to prevent adulteration. This will prevent the fall in prices and create an environment where the casava farmers will get a fair price.
Apart from this, a separate board should be set up for cassava research, production and marketing.
